LSBA 2nd Annual Small Business Summit

Full Description:

Mark your calendars for the Longmont Small Business Association 2nd Annual Small Business Summit on January 20, 2007 — you will not want to miss this free and exciting presentation. LSBA is proud to announce that Michael Shuman, author of the new book The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Competition, will be the featured speaker. As Joal Makeower writes about the book on WorldChanging.com: “‘Small-Mart’ refers to locally owned businesses that are more reliable generators of good jobs, economic growth, tax dollars, community wealth, charitable contributions, social stability, and political participation. Shuman’s very readable and entertaining book makes clear that this ‘revolution’ is about ‘far more than fighting chain stores’: it is notable as much for what it stands for than what it is against. The only thing Shuman is against is ‘the vast web of laws and public policies that directly disadvantage small and local businesses’ in favor of large, global ones.” Michael Shuman is Vice President of Enterprise Development for the Training and Development Corporation (TDC) of Bucksport, Maine. A noted economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur, Shuman is widely recognized for his research into the economic advantages of small-scale businesses in an era of globalization as well as the often over-looked benefits of building local economies in an era of big-box retail chains. He has authored, coauthored, and edited seven books, including The Small Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Competition (Berrett-Koehler, 2006) and Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in the Global Age (Free Press, 1998). This event is focused entirely on small business because small businesses are the glue of our community. Small business owners are our family, friends and neighbors who are asked daily to provide financial, volunteer and charitable support to the community. This event is designed to educate the general public about how they can return small businesses’ contributions to the community as well as provide positive information and useful resources for small businesses. To encourage attendance, there will be no admission fee to this event. Intuitive Office and the Longmont Office Center are the presenting sponsors of the 2nd Annual LSBA Small Business Summit. Corporate sponsors are: Daily Times-Call, DGO Access, HardCopy Solutions, Home 123 Mortgage, Instant Imprints, Longmont Clinic, Longmont Power & Communications, Longmont United Hospital, Micro Business Development Corporation and TIDBITS of the Longmont Area.
