News Details (Posted: August 29, 2006):
Longmont could extend into Weld
Full Description:
If the city eventually accepts all four annexation proposals on its eastern border, Longmont could expand into Weld County by 1,251 acres, 3,410 homes and about 9,000 new residents.
Tonight, city leaders will learn more about two of those planned developments.
Drafts show 1,810 new homes projected for the 446-acre West Union neighborhood along the west side of Union Reservoir. And developers of the Newby/Adam property, on the northwestern border of St. Vrain State Park and a half-mile east of Union Reservoir, want to build 1,000 homes on 418 acres.
The Adam property and most of the West Union land is already in Weld County’s mixed-use development (MUD) area, where county leaders approve urban-scale development outside town and city limits.
Land developers from Village Homes have submitted simultaneous annexation requests into Longmont and the MUD for the Newby property. Village Homes did not immediately return a phone call asking which jurisdiction the Newby property would prefer to join.
Including the two under discussion at tonight’s council meeting, four future neighborhoods between the city’s eastern border and Interstate 25 are asking to join Longmont. Project LifeBridge and Fairview Estates neighborhoods — both southeast of Union Reservoir and north of Colo. Highway 119, and both affiliated with LifeBridge Christian Church — would like to build about 600 residential units on a combined 387 acres there.
The Longmont City Council meeting will open with a public comment period tonight, but city officials list neither the West Union nor Newby/Adam annexation proposals as public hearings.
